Sustainability at the Hotel Sedartis
At Hotel Sedartis, we implement specific measures in the areas of energy, resources, and employees—all of which are reviewed as part of the ibex-fairstay certification process.
ibex fairstay Gold certified
The Sedartis Hotel has been awarded the ibex fairstay Gold certification.
ibex fairstay supports lodging and food service businesses in further developing their operational management based on defined sustainability criteria. It recognizes restaurants, hotels, and other types of lodging that achieve above-average sustainability performance based on these criteria. This comprehensive support covers five dimensions: management quality, ecology, regional focus, social responsibility, and finance & performance. Practical opportunities for improvement are identified using a catalog of measures as well as supported calculations and analyses. Depending on the rating achieved, businesses are awarded different ibex fairstay certification levels. This industry solution is recognized as proof of sustainability for Swisstainable Level III – Leading certification by the Center of Excellence for Sustainability (KONA) of the Swiss Tourism Federation (STV).
Photovoltaic system
As a hotel, we consume a total of 450,000 kWh of electricity per year. Since January 2023, our 32 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof of our hotel has enabled us to generate 8–10% of our annual electricity needs using our own solar energy.
District heating
Since mid-2024, the Hotel Sedartis has been powered 100 percent by thermal energy from Lake Zurich—for heating and hot water. Previously, our heating system ran on gas. The Thalwil Heating Network developed this district heating network in collaboration with Energie 360°; it uses the temperature difference in the lake water to generate energy. This has allowed us to switch from fossil fuels to renewable heat and cooling.
EnAW – Energy Agency for Industry
Since 2012, we have been actively involved in voluntary climate protection with a focus on CO2 reduction and energy efficiency. We identified potential savings in close cooperation with our energy supplier. Our intelligent kitchen ventilation system only works at full speed when it is actually needed. This and many other small changes have a big impact – we are committed to the conscious use of resources every day.
Less food waste
We want to minimize food waste as much as possible. We implement various measures to reduce food waste. For example, we pay close attention to the size of our portions and provide small bowls at our buffet. Through thoughtful purchasing practices, careful storage, and versatile use of ingredients, we strive every day to prevent food waste.
Employees
Together with our partner hotel Belvoir, we are committed to our employees. In addition to exciting training and further education opportunities, we offer apprenticeships in four different hospitality professions every year. We have been recognized as a top training company because we are very committed to our apprentices and offer them excellent training. We also work together with leading hotel management schools to train trainees. We attach great importance to the well-being of our employees and offer them numerous benefits in order to remain attractive as an employer and to be able to establish and maintain long-term employment relationships.
WfW
WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) is an international nonprofit organization with a vision to ensure that water is managed in a climate-friendly and equitable manner. We at Hotel Sedartis encourage the consumption of tap water instead of bottled water, and we use the proceeds to support projects in Africa that are working to achieve sustainable improvements in local water and sanitation services.
Plastic-free
Whenever possible, we use plastic-free alternatives in the kitchen, the guest rooms, the restaurant, and our seminar rooms. For example, since 2022, we have been offering plastic-free wooden shoehorns, and we are constantly evaluating other plastic-free products. All shower gels and soaps in the guest rooms are biodegradable.
Electric charging stations
Our underground parking garage has 4 charging stations for electric vehicles—for guests who arrive by electric car.
Paperless
We are reducing paper consumption thanks to digitization. Wherever possible, we invoice our guests electronically. Suppliers are instructed to submit their invoices via our online portal. All internal processing, including accounting, is digital. Documents such as personnel dossiers, inventories and receipts are filed and archived electronically. This has enabled us to reduce our paper consumption by up to 75% in recent years.
Swisstainable
The Sedartis Hotel, together with the Belvoir Hotel, participates in the Swiss Tourism Federation’s Swisstainable program, through which the Swiss tourism industry is working collectively to promote greater sustainability in tourism.
Mobility
Thanks to our ideal location right next to the train station in Thalwil, we are easily and conveniently accessible by public transportation for both our guests and our employees.
